Why Stockholm has become the Nordic hub for data and AI
Few cities combine as many different kinds of data and AI experience in one place as Stockholm.
The city is home to digital-native companies that grew up on data, such as Spotify, King and Klarna. Sweden’s large industrial groups, including Ericsson, Saab, ABB, Scania and Epiroc, are now turning decades of engineering expertise into industrial AI. The Nordic public sector is among the most digitally advanced in the world, with agencies such as Skatteverket and Bolagsverket working seriously with data and AI. Research institutes such as RISE and the Swedish AI Factory initiatives add research capacity and infrastructure to the mix.
The Nordics also have a practical advantage: the region is small enough that the people who shape it can fit into a single venue. That is a large part of why the Nordic data community has gathered in Stockholm every May for more than a decade. Practitioners from Helsinki, Oslo, Copenhagen and across Sweden come to Stockholm not only to listen to talks, but to meet the peers they will work alongside, hire and collaborate with for the rest of the year.
The Nordic data and AI calendar for 2027
The flagship event of the Nordic year is the Data Innovation Summit, held at Kistamässan in Stockholm on 18-20 May 2027. It is organised by Hyperight and has run since 2016.
The 2027 edition is the 12th. It brings together more than 3,500 delegates from over 50 countries across fifteen stages: two Foundation Days covering data, analytics and AI capabilities, and an Industry Day covering five sectors. The theme is “From Data & AI to Enterprise Capability”, reflecting the region’s shift from experimentation to measurable value. The summit is also home to the DAIR Awards, which recognise Nordic organisations leading in data and AI, and to Data After Dark, one of the region’s best-known networking evenings.
Later in the year, the Nordic Data Science & ML Summit (NDSML) offers a smaller, deeply technical programme in Stockholm, typically in November [confirm 2027 dates]. It focuses on production-ready AI systems, autonomous agents, AI infrastructure and evaluation, and suits engineering teams who want concentrated technical depth.
Alongside these independent events, several platform vendors run one-day Stockholm stops as part of their world tours. These are useful for product depth on a specific technology stack.
Is the Data Innovation Summit only for Nordic attendees?
No. Most delegates come from the Nordic countries, but the summit welcomes participants from more than 50 countries and has always combined regional strengths with global perspectives. Past editions have featured speakers from leading Nordic organisations such as Spotify, Maersk, King, Novo Nordisk, Saab and Vattenfall. They have also featured international organisations such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, Tesla, Siemens, PepsiCo, Hugging Face and Booking.com.
For many international attendees, the summit is the fastest way to understand how Nordic companies turn data and AI into results. Nordic companies are often early and pragmatic adopters of new technology.
What Nordic organisations are focusing on in 2027
Three themes stand out in the Nordic conversation going into 2027.
The first is industrial and physical AI. The region has a strong manufacturing, energy, mining and engineering base, and AI is moving from dashboards into machines, plants and autonomous systems. The Data Innovation Summit reflects this with a dedicated Industrial & Physical AI Spotlight stage for the first time in 2027.
The second is sovereignty and trust. Nordic public organisations and regulated industries increasingly treat data sovereignty, security and the EU AI Act as design requirements rather than afterthoughts.
The third is culture. Nordic companies tend to scale change through autonomy and trust rather than top-down mandates, and many of the most-discussed case studies at the summit are as much about people and ways of working as about technology.
The Data Innovation Summit in Stockholm is the largest applied data, analytics and AI conference in Sweden and the Nordics, with more than 3,500 delegates.
The Data Innovation Summit is held every May, on 18-20 May in 2027. More specialised events, such as the Nordic Data Science & ML Summit, follow in the autumn.
Yes. Almost all of them are, including every session at the Data Innovation Summit.
About the Data Innovation Summit
The Data Innovation Summit is the largest and most influential annual applied data, analytics and AI event in the Nordics, organised by Hyperight in Stockholm since 2016. The 12th edition, DIS2027X2, takes place on 18–20 May 2027 at Kistamässan in Stockholm under the theme “From Data & AI to Enterprise Capability”.
The summit brings together more than 3,500 practitioners, business leaders, technology providers, start-ups and academics from over 50 countries. The programme runs across fifteen stages: two Foundation Days dedicated to data, analytics and AI capabilities, and an Industry Day covering five sectors.
The summit is a hybrid event, with every session streamed live and available on demand.
