AI-Ready Data: The 2027 Priority Nobody Can Skip

Quick Facts

• 57% of CDOs say data reliability blocks the move from pilot to production (Informatica, 2026).
• 72% of organisations say their data architecture needs a significant overhaul for AI (Cloudera, 2026).
• Gartner expects universal semantic layers to become critical infrastructure by 2030.
• At DIS 2027, AI-ready data is covered on four Foundation Days stages.

What “AI-ready data” actually means

“AI-ready data” has become one of the most used phrases in the industry, and also one of the least defined. In practice, it means data that an AI system, or an AI agent, can find, understand, trust and use, at the speed and scale that AI requires. That definition has five parts.

Quality must be measurable. In an AI-ready organisation, data quality is defined in contracts with service levels that applications can depend on. It is not hoped for or checked only after something breaks.

Meaning must be shared. Business concepts and metrics are defined explicitly in a semantic or context layer, so people, analytics tools and AI agents all interpret “customer”, “revenue” or “active user” the same way.

Governance must be enforceable. Policies exist as automated, machine-verifiable controls rather than documents in a shared folder.

Lineage must work. It should be possible to trace where an answer came from. That matters for trust, for auditing and for regulations such as the EU AI Act.

Unstructured data counts too. Documents, images, audio and conversations must be prepared and governed with the same care as tables, because they are now a large share of what AI systems consume.

Why AI-ready data is the priority for 2027

Data readiness is where AI projects most often fail. Pilots succeed because they run on curated samples. Production meets the real estate of silos, conflicting definitions, missing owners and silent failures. In Informatica’s 2026 survey, 57% of CDOs said data reliability was the main barrier between pilot and production. Cloudera found that 72% of organisations believe their data architecture needs a significant overhaul to support AI.

Agents make the problem more urgent. An analyst who receives a wrong number may notice something looks odd. An agent with access to unreliable data will simply take the wrong action.

There is also a quieter structural shift underway: machines are becoming bigger consumers of enterprise data than humans. Platforms, pipelines and databases designed for dashboards and monthly reports now have to serve AI applications that query continuously, at machine speed.

Where each role should start

Data engineers. The priority is to build quality checks, testing and observability into every pipeline rather than adding them afterwards. It also includes making data contracts work at scale, preparing unstructured data for retrieval, and making honest decisions about when real-time data is worth its cost.

Architects. The semantic and context layer is becoming core infrastructure. Architects also have to design for hybrid and sovereign requirements, and federate metadata across clouds and legacy systems instead of copying everything into one place.

Chief Data Officers and governance leaders. The work is to make ownership real rather than theoretical, to automate classification, lineage and stewardship wherever possible, and to measure the value of data in terms that survive a conversation with the CFO.

Database and data quality specialists. Their challenges are increasingly specific to AI: choosing between vector, graph and hybrid retrieval, detecting silent data failures before they become wrong AI decisions, and rethinking master data management for a world in which agents need a trusted view of customers, products and suppliers.

Where AI-ready data is covered at DIS 2027

At the 2027 Data Innovation Summit, AI-ready data runs through four of the ten Foundation Days stages:

  • Data Engineering & DataOps: pipelines, data contracts, streaming and unstructured data.
  • Data Platform & Architecture: semantic and context layers, sovereign platforms and knowledge graphs.
  • Data Strategy & Governance: ownership, enforceable governance, data products and measuring the value of data.
  • Databases, Context & Data Quality: data quality agreements, retrieval architectures and agent memory.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI-ready data mean?

It is data that AI systems can find, understand, trust and use. That requires measurable quality, shared semantics, enforceable governance, traceable lineage and well-managed unstructured data.

Why is data quality the biggest blocker for AI?

Pilots succeed on curated data, while production exposes inconsistent, unowned and unmonitored data. Agents can turn those data errors directly into wrong actions.

What is a semantic layer, and why does AI need one?

A semantic layer is a shared, machine-readable definition of business concepts and metrics. Without one, AI systems interpret data inconsistently and can produce confident but incorrect answers.

About the Data Innovation Summit

The Data Innovation Summit is the largest and most influential annual applied data, analytics and AI event in the Nordics, organised by Hyperight in Stockholm since 2016. The 12th edition, DIS2027X2, takes place on 18–20 May 2027 at Kistamässan in Stockholm under the theme “From Data & AI to Enterprise Capability”.

The summit brings together more than 3,500 practitioners, business leaders, technology providers, start-ups and academics from over 50 countries. The programme runs across fifteen stages: two Foundation Days dedicated to data, analytics and AI capabilities, and an Industry Day covering five sectors.
The summit is a hybrid event, with every session streamed live and available on demand.

Regional editions are held in Dubai, Singapore and Sydney.
